A vibrant 37-year-old educator walked through our doors, burdened by the presence of bulgy varicose veins spanning the anterior (front) and lateral (outer) areas of both her thighs and knees. These unwelcome veins had made their appearance around her 20s, steadily worsening over time. As a dedicated teacher, her days were often marked by prolonged periods of standing, leading to distressing night cramps.
Seeking solace, she discovered that elevating her legs provided some respite from the discomfort—classic symptoms of varicose veins were beginning to take their toll. Beyond the physical unease, she carried concerns about the veins' impact on her health and the visible toll they took on her confidence. Previous experience had shown her the potential complications, as she once grappled with a clot in her left-sided varicose veins, adeptly managed and resolved by her GP's interventions.
Veins Treatment Procedure
Extensive varices were found on both of her legs during our rigorous examination, which called for an extensive treatment plan. During her first appointment, a Duplex Ultrasound (DU) examination revealed the causes of these bulging veins. The Great Saphenous Vein (GSV) and its anterior branch, the Anterior Accessory of the Great Saphenous Vein (AAGSV), were the two culprits responsible for her left-sided surface varices. The source of the varicose veins was a muscle perforator on the right side.
Our strategy became clear: to tackle the root causes of the surface varices, the solution was an Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) procedure, skillfully executed under local anesthesia. With success rates as high as 95% under expert hands, this outpatient, walk-in, walk-out procedure offered renewed hope.
A brief week of wearing compression stockings (for daytime use only) was a small price to pay. The tenacious educator was back to her calling within days; minor discomfort was no match for her determination. Following the EVLA, the spotlight turned to the left leg, where ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy (UGS) was the chosen path. This technique targeted both the visible and hidden aberrant branches of refluxing (abnormal backflow) GSV and AAGSV. Impressively, she sailed through the UGS experience with minimal discomfort and negligible downtime. The attention then shifted to the right thigh's rebellious perforator, which was tamed with a precise application of cyanoacrylate glue, followed by a round of UGS.
A mere 12 weeks after embarking on this transformative journey, captured in an image snapped after three treatment sessions, the change was nothing short of astonishing. Gone were the symptoms that once cast a shadow over her days and nights. In their place stood a picture of contentment and triumph.
Today, as she looks back on her voyage to wellness, our remarkable patient radiates satisfaction. Both the aesthetic and medical outcomes have surpassed her expectations, leaving her free to once again embrace life's endeavors with unshakable confidence.
