EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation) or RFA (Radiofrequency Ablation) treatment is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins. It is performed in an outpatient setting using local anesthesia. It is usually used to treat the superficial vein system in the leg known as the saphenous veins, which demonstrate reflux on ultrasound.
The methods of EVLA or RFA treatment are used to remove the Great Saphenous Veins (GSV) and Small Saphenous Veins (SSV) from the bloodstream without causing a cut or stripping the vein. Any of these procedures are done under local anesthesia.

From the ankle or knee level, a catheter is moved up the vein. It is positioned with caution at the intersection of the GSV/SSV and the deeper veins. The catheter is accurately placed using an ultrasound scan. Heat or laser energy is passed through the vein wall as the catheter is brought in contact with it. This causes the proteins in the vein wall to change shape and contract down. This leaves the vein contracted down and stops blood flow through it.
Long-term follow-up has shown that the veins largely remain closed off and rarely open up again. Most patients experience minor discomfort maybe for a week or two. There might remain very little numbness in and around the treatment area.
Avoid crossing the legs or prolonged standing, heavy lifting, strenuous exercises, hot bath, or extreme sports activities. Try to rest the leg in an elevated position, walk for a minimum of 30 minutes per day is generally suggested.
